How do I check my keyword ranking? So, you did comprehensive research, wrote a fantastic piece of content, and then published it. But how do you tell whether your content is performing well on Google or not?

It’s simple. You can do so by looking at your keyword rankings. How can you do this?

Some of you might want to try that silly method in which you search for your keyword on Google and then start exploring the pages one by one to find if your keyword is one of those results.

But hear me out. Millions of keywords are searched on Google daily, making it impossible to check your rankings using this method. So, drop this idea and read on as I have put together some of the best ways for checking your keyword ranking in minutes.

Let’s not waste any time and get right to the topic

Why Do We Need To Check Keywords Ranking?

The question that a lot of you ask is, why do you need to check keyword rankings? Let me tell you.

The process of checking the rankings of your keywords is also known as “Monitoring keywords.”

This process is for letting you know the weakness of your content so you can work on it and improve its rankings.

For example, your keyword is ranking in the 15th position on Google despite having high-quality content. Then why is that so? Why are your competitors ranking higher for the same keyword?

It means there is something you could have done better while writing your content to beat your competitors. You can only get a clue about these things by monitoring the positions of your keywords.

The second reason why you need to do so is that the positions of your keywords may change.

It’s needless to tell you that your content has to compete with other existing articles that are ranking higher on Google.

For instance, you’re ranking for any keyword on the 3rd position of the first page of Google, but it doesn’t mean that you’ll always be there. You may also get de-ranked by your competitors.

Therefore, you must know about the positions of your keywords so that you can take action at the right time. Also, Checking rankings is an important part of keyword Research since it displays which terms drive the most traffic to your website.

You can monitor their status or attempt to enhance your ranks with them. This will allow you to examine how many clicks and impressions each term receives and your average click-through rate (CTR).

Also, You’ll know how your brand’s visibility under each phrase has evolved over time, as well as make decisions depending on where you rank in search results

How to Check Keyword Rankings In Google

The good news is that there are numerous methods for determining rankings. Below are mentioned all of them, along with the instructions for applying them. You can go for any method you want.

1) Checking Keyword Rankings Manually

The first method is to check the positions of your keywords manually without involving any tool. It’s a great alternative if you have some time to spend on the process.

In this method, you search for your keyword on Google and then keep scrolling down until you find the keyword.

I’ve stated earlier that it’s impossible to find keywords using this method, and it indeed is. But, I have a little hack that you can use to make this method efficient for you.

You only need to somehow manage to check the number of the page on which your keyword is ranking. You can do that with any tool or from the search console.

Let’s say your keyword is ranking on the second or third page, then it’ll be easier for you to use this method. You can directly go to that specific page and then see what contents are ranking higher than you and make a plan to bring them down.

You’ll save a lot of time and get the work done faster this way. You can try it out or leave it because we have better options ahead.

2) Checking The Positions Of Keywords Using Search Console

You may be aware of the “Search Console,” which is a crucial tool to have for any website. It tells you about all the merits and demerits of your site, including the keywords rankings.

The best thing is that it’s a free tool for checking the positions of your keywords. That’s not all; it also tells you the (CTR) and the impressions of each article.

Sounds interesting? Furthermore, it doesn’t take much time. How can you use it? just head over to the Search Console of the site and there, you’ll get all the metrics telling you about everything related to your site.

Head over to the “Performance tab,” which you’ll get on the left side of the page. When you access the Performance report, you’ll get a dashboard having 4 columns at the header and a graph below.

To show the total amount of clicks, impressions, average CTR, and average position of the terms, toggle these boxes.

Then, you’ll get a graph under each box that will show you how the performance of your site has been over the last few months.

By clicking on the phrase “Date last three months” and modifying the dates, you can increase or decrease the time range. Now, a table will appear under the graph. The Query tab should be chosen by default.

If it is not, click the word “Queries” to get the query data (i.e. keywords). In the table’s first column, You’ll see a list of all those keywords that your site ranks for. This comprises all of the domain’s keywords.

By setting the “Rows per page” parameter to 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 250, or 500, you can choose how many keywords are displayed in the list. The list can also be navigated with the left and right arrows.

a . Figure Out The Ranking Of Your Website

Now, the position column will appear in the table’s last column. This box displays your website’s Google ranking for a certain keyword entered in the query queue.

To know which keywords rank in the lowest and highest positions on Google, click on the word “Position” to flip the position column between ascending and descending order.

Remember, this is not the data of a particular keyword but rather of your overall website. So, to check what queries each of your website webpages is ranking for, follow the below-mentioned steps

b . Search The Keywords For Each Webpage Of your Website

  • Click the “Pages” button which will be on the right side of the “Queries” tab to get started. This will change the table in a way that each URL on your website will be displayed in descending order based on how many times it has been clicked. Under “Top pages,” the URLs are listed in the first column.
  • Then, in Google, click on a URL for which you wish to see keyword rankings. This will strip out all other URLs, leaving you with only one to concentrate on.

When two of the above-mentioned steps are done, click on “Queries once again.” As a result, the table will show a list of keywords for that specific URL.

All other URLs and keywords will have been stripped out of the table. After that, you’ll be able to see a filter on the right of the date: last three months

This filter will now show you the URL you picked in the above table. Simply click the X button to see all inquiries for all URLs on your site and reset the table.

You can browse the results of your search by scrolling down the page to see where your selected keywords’ URL rank in Google. By clicking on the “Position” column heading, you may quickly sort the ranking position column in ascending or decreasing order.

c . How Can You Filter Keywords?

  • First of all, select the 3-line menu symbol in the top right corner of the table.
  • Then, check the option of “Top Queries.”
  • Then, in the “Filter by top queries” section, insert the keyword you’re looking for. On your left-hand side will be a dropdown menu, make sure there “Contains” option is chosen.

This is how you may monitor the rankings of your keywords using the Google search console.

SEO tools are something every blogger knows about. They’re designed to make the work easier for bloggers. They provide the full details about your existing, past, and upcoming content as well.

For that reason, utilizing paid tools is the simplest and fastest approach to checking the ranking of your keywords. I’m going to mention some of the best tools that you can use to easily check the positions of your keywords.

a . Ahrefs

Ahrefs is a leading SEO tool in the world. When it comes to having a lot of SEO features in a single tool, Ahrefs always comes first. Even though this tool is premium, luckily, it offers some free tools as well.

Luckily, it has a free tool called “Rank Checker” that will tell you about the position of your keyword in Google searp. Just search for “Ahrefs Free Rank Checker Tool” on Google and open it.

There you’ll get a search bar where you can put in the keyword that you want to see the ranking of and your website URL. Then hit Enter. This tool will now scan all of the searp results and tell you the position of your keyword.

On average, each page contains ten results. So, if your keyword is ranking in the #10 position, it means you’re on the first page of Google. If you wish to check the position of your keyword again, you can repeat the process.

b . Semrush

This tool is the most valuable and used tool in the world after Ahrefs. The best thing about SEMRush is that it can discover practically every term that your website ranks for without requiring you to provide the keywords in advance.

You can, however, create a list of hand-picked keywords for which you’d want to check Google results on a regular basis. How do you use it to check your keyword position? Just head over to SEMRUSH, and on the left side of its page, there will be all its tools.

Click on the “Position tracking” option and put in the URL of your site. It’ll ask you to put in other things as well. So, just do that. And then hit Enter. Now, it’ll scan all the search results and tell you how many keywords your site is ranking for. You can now search for a specific term using the “Include” metrics.

Just put your keyword into the “Include” metrice, and your keyword will pop up. There you’ll know what position your keyword is ranking for, including the traffic it’s getting. If you can’t provide so many details, then you can simply use the “Organic search” option to do the same.

Just put your domain in the search box, and you’ll get all the keywords that your website is ranking for. Then use the Position tracking feature to see how your keywords are performing. That’s how simple it is.

c . Moz

Moz is another great SEO tool on the market. It lacks the functionality of the two tools listed above. But still, it’ll help you to check the ranking of your keywords. It has a separate rank checker tool that you can use.

Just go to Moz, and on the left side of it, select the “Rank Tracker” option. After that type the keywords into the search bar and press Enter. And boom, the ranking of your keyword will come in front of you.

d . WebCEO

It’s a cheap SEO tool that will help you find the ranking of your keywords. The tool is packed with a number of amazing SEO metrics that can help you monitor your and your competitors’ sites comprehensively.

The process is the same for this tool as well. You can just put in the URL of your site or your keyword, and then you’ll get the full insight of your keywords, including their position in the Google searp.

The paid tools mentioned above have different plans with specific limits. You can search for limited keywords and check their rankings. So, it’ll depend on your budget and which tool you have to take.

If you don’t want to invest in a tool, the Google search console is ideal because it won’t take as much time as your manual research will.
